Iraq, after the turmoil that the country has gone through, is now in immediate need for increasing power generation. Some of the existing capacity (that including generation/distribution facilities and the like) was lost during turbulent times where in addition some of the assets are believed to be long overdue for either upgrade or renewal. Power shortages range 6 to 16 hours, and in certain places electricity is yet to be delivered.
Energy is key to development anywhere in the world, and Iraq is no exception. Iraq, a country which holds some 115 billion bbls of reserves at the current estimates, with further potential as high as 100 billion bbls or more, according to expert views, offers significant upside in income to be utilized for the economic growth of the country. An improved lifestyle through modern roads, schools, universities, hospitals, hotels, ports, airports and the like would require vast quantities of further power generation.
Iraq, although mostly in associated form, has significant quantities of natural gas that could be utilized.We believe that power generation through combined gas cycle turbines is most suited to Iraq’s model of increasing power generation capacity in the quickest possible way.
We capture within our vision to be part of the solution where possible, contributing to well-being of societies through efficiently delivering what we know best. With that in mind Eastern Lights Energy is formed as a joint venture. In this venture, General System Design (GSD) of Turkey brings in knowledge and expertise in the area of constructing gas fired power plants with a current experience of 500 MW size plant construction, where the rest of us bring in nearly 30 years of experience on Iraq and in energy.
